Is Muay Thai Good For Kids?

You probably saw this article’s title and scoffed. How could a full-contact combat sport be beneficial (or, frankly, safe) for a kid?

I’m here to prove the exact opposite. Yes, when the instruction is done right, there are tons of reasons why Muay Thai is great for kids!

Self-Defense

Self-defense is probably the most obvious benefit of Muay Thai and is an important skill for kids and adults alike. Learning these tactics in a formal martial arts setting can help kids develop a knowledge base to defend themselves if necessary.

Discipline and Focus

Another important skill to learn is mental toughness, a hallmark of training Muay Thai. Muay Thai is hard – in and out of the ring. Learning how to apply and push yourself through a challenge in Muay Thai strengthens that ability for future roadblocks at school or a job. Muay Thai also teaches you to set goals and work to achieve them. Both of these skills are so important in building a successful, motivated person and are perfect for a child to learn.

Confidence

In the same sense, boosted self-confidence is a natural result of all of that discipline and challenge-facing! In my experience, facing the challenges posed by Muay Thai makes me so proud of myself and motivated to keep going. Afterward, I feel like I can conquer any struggle that comes my way.

Respect

Respect is a cornerstone of any martial arts experience. In Muay Thai, respect is emphasized in and out of the gym: to teachers, family, peers, the Thai culture, and especially to yourself. Learning respect is a vital component of personal and social development, and it sets the stage for meaningful connections, experiences, and goals down the line.

Community

At the end of the day, learning and training Muay Thai is a team effort. In an encouraging community, you learn how to support your teammates and peers while practicing healthy habits that will last a lifetime. I started training Muay Thai with a team when I was 15, and now, at 19, I can talk about the feeling of family associated with my team and coaches for hours. Without a doubt, the gym is my favorite place to be, and it can be for your kids, too.

Finding a Youth Muay Thai Program

Despite all of the benefits I just told you about, Muay Thai is still a combat sport, so it’s really important that the facility you choose for your child is professional, passionate, and experienced. Whether or not your kid enjoys Muay Thai is entirely up to the gym and coach. A good gym and coach should understand the difference between training kids and adults and the ins and outs of physical growth for kids (among other things) in order to appropriately apply Muay Thai’s benefits. I recommend talking to a few different gyms before deciding on one – it’s just like choosing your child's education.

If you’re interested in starting that conversation, Atlas Muay Thai Gym offers a Youth Muay Thai program in the Washington, DC area. You can reach us via email or book a first class for your kid to try it out.
